INTRODUCTION

Since it's establishment in 1989 the EEP for the lion-tailed macaque used the database
which was provided by the International Studbook (L. Gledhill, 1987, continued by H.
Fitch-Snyder, 2000). A critical revision of the European data was carried out recently by
the EEP coordinator. The resulting European Studbook is presented here. New or
corrected data, especially From the last five years, will be integrated into the International
Studbook in a next step.

Part of the data compilation has been done by A. Husung and P. Schmid, German Primate
Center; data evaluation and analysis by Ellen Krebs, Cologne Zoo.

We believe that an appropriate management of the living Ltm population besides others
has to be based on knowledge about the history of the European lion-tailed macaques and
therefore much emphasis was put on the careful description and analysis of the historical
population.

Besides information about the actual status of the EEP population you will find first
results of crude analysis' on the longterm development of the European population in
terms of population growth, births, and mortality.

The results of more detailed analysis' and resulting recommendations for the future
longterm management with special reference to the status of the wild population will be
provided in a second volume.
