EUROPEAN STUDBOOK FOR THE: SOOTY MANGABEY (CERCOCEBUS ATYS ATYS), WHITE-CROWNED MANGABEY (CERCOCEBUS A. LUNULATUS), AND THE CHERRY-CROWNED MANGABEY (CERCOCEBUS TORQUATUS)

INTRODUCTION AND COMMENTS

This studbook covers the European region for the species below during the year 2000:

Sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys atys)
White crowned mangabey (Cercocebus atys lunulatus)
Cherry-crowned mangabey (Cercocebus torquatus)

Some institutions failed to answer the annual questionnaire this year too. It is really a problem not to get updated
information from all the institutions and a big difficulty for trying to establish a good coordination and cooperation
between us.

The captive population of Sooty mangabey is declining and, taking into account the tolerable state of this subspecies in the
wild, we wonder if we should start considering the possibility of phasing out its studbook to concentrate all efforts and
resources in the other two subspecies.

Some analyses are shown at the end of each studbook.
